mission statement
the mission of the barnabas place ministries is to be
jesus christ's representatives to a lost and hurting world;
to be his hands reaching out to those in need.
purpose
to encourage people, to meet the needs of those around us,
and to tell others the good news about jesus christ.
1) the barnabas place home for boy'z :
the barnabas place home for boy'z is a home,
(not an institution) for ages ranging from ten to eighteen
years old and up.
the boys we take in are homeless boys, or boys that have
difficulty in their homes.or in the court system.
some of the things we work on with the boys are:
substance abuse, anger management, social skills, life
skills, restorative justice, and employment readiness
the home:
the barnabas place is a large victorian era home set in
downtown muskegon the poor area. it is within easy walking
distance of muskegon high school, hackley public library, the
muskegon county hall of justice, community mental health
youth services, child and family services, catholic social
services, the county health department, and hackley
hospital.
the barnabas place home has six bedrooms on the second
floor. spacious sitting rooms, a dining room that seats up to
32 people, kitchen, and office are located on the main floor.
in the basement there are laundry facilities, a sitting room/tv
room for the boys, and a schoolroom, computer room and
library. there are several comfortable and attractive outdoor
seating areas as well, so there is plenty of room for the boys'
families to visit, even sharing meals on occasion.
the garage is being converted to youth/family center, after i
save up the money for it, about ($150,000.00 needed). this is
where you can help.
the yard is equipped with a trampoline, swimming pool in the
summer and a basketball hoop.
goals:
that each person
1) receive jesus christ as their personal savior and try to
live an upright and productive life.
2) work to be a lighthouse in the community.
3) have the proper social skills necessary to maintain healthy
relationships in life.
4) achieve a high school diploma or a ged that is recognized
by colleges.
5) have a job that he can enjoy doing and will meet personal
needs.
6) obtain a valid michigan driver's license and possess a
vehicle that will meet the need for transportation.
7) be able to access college education or job skills training if
interested in these opportunities.
8) have a safe place to live.
9) be properly prepared, upon leaving the home, to live
safely, comfortably, and independently
community service:
we believe that it is important for everyone to give back to
the community. therefore, community service projects are an
important part of the barnabas place home. all boys will
participate regularly in projects such as doing yard work for
elderly people, picking up litter in parks, helping out at local
churches and food banks, or other similar projects that come
to our attention.
dad & mom:
rick and bev durga have been married for over 23 years.
they have two birth sons.
rick had a rough childhood and teen years, with a
background similar to that of many of the boys that come to
the barnabas place. at the age of 19, rick made the decision
to follow christ, and his life totally changed from that point
on. he quit smoking, stopped abusing alcohol and drugs, and
also stopped engaging in other illegal and immoral activities.
rick has a high school diploma and has worked in a variety of
different fields, such as restaurants, retail, and management
positions. he owned his own firewood business for many
years. he has worked with a variety of different people in
different situations, and has a good deal of experience in
managing businesses. he is well-known and well-respected in
his community. he is also well- known in the court system
and at fia, and has a good working relationship with both
places.
bev was raised in a christian home, committed her life to
christ at a young age, and has been active in church for most
of her life. she graduated from muskegon high school as the
valedictorian of her class. she then attended lee college, a
christian college in tennessee for four years and graduated
summa cum laude with a bachelor of sciences degree in
education. after college, she was the director of a day care
center and taught preschool at that center until deciding to
stay home to be a full time mother. she has also worked at
child haven, the local emergency shelter for abused and
neglected children, and as an educational assistant in the
muskegon public school system.
together, rick and bev have been involved in teaching
sunday school, being youth group leaders and directors, and
other church ministries for their entire marriage. they have
also taught training seminars for other youth leaders. over
the years, they have helped to raise over 104 sons, and now
have at least 32 grandchildren. rick and bev consider the
barnabas place to be far more than a job. this is their
ministry, their calling in life. the boys of the barnabas place
are strongly encouraged to keep in regular contact after they
move out. rick and bev consider all of the barnabas boys to
be important parts of their family. they continue to help
former boys with their education, to obtain driver's licenses
and id's, to get jobs, and with other things like laundry and
food. it is their goal that all their boys become and stay
successful, and they are willing to help in any way possible.
2) home church ministries:
we are a home-based church with a small congregation of
up to 48 people. when the group reaches 32-48 people, the
group will split into two groups. one of the objectives of the
church is to split once a year and form other congregations in
other neighborhoods. the purpose of our church is to be able
to really be involved in other peoples' lives, to help, and to
disciple others.
we have three services every week, with three very
different purposes. sunday morning is for all ages, a worship
service including music, prayer, and teaching from the bible,
followed by a dinner. tuesday nights are for kids; we have
games, crafts, music, story, and a meal. on thursday nights,
we have a bible study for adults, beginning with dinner, and
followed by a time of learning and discussing christian
principles. we are a neighborhood based church. our goal is
to reach the people in the surrounding neighborhood that are
unchurched. it is not the church's goal to draw people away
from any other full-gospel, bible believing body of believers,
but rather to reach those who are not involved in other
christian fellowships.
we believe in meeting the physical needs of people as
well as their spiritual needs. the matthew 25:35 project is a
monthly ministry of the church that collects and distributes
groceries to needy families in the area. the helping hand
project helps provide transportation to necessary
appointments, or procure services such as eye exams or pet
care.
we also believe that christians should have fun together.
once a month, the youth of the church have an outing, such
as sledding or bowling. the men gather every month for a
brunch; the ladies have a monthly tea party. the fourth
friday of every month is a family game night, when we get
together to play old-fashioned board or card games and have
snacks together.
3) the barnabas place center: we need to get started.
this is where you can help. $150,000 needed. the
barnabas place center is a youth/family center, although not
the typical youth center. it will be a place to play games with
friends (although not video games or pool, rather the old-
fashioned types of games that encourage conversation).
there will be a snack bar serving free snacks. various types
of wholesome, family oriented entertainment will be offered,
including movies, audio story times, puppet shows, and live
speakers. help with homework will be available, including
research materials and tutoring.

Cannon Director, Paper Product Development The Procter & Gamble Company | | | | | | | | | | Author : Leonard L. Berry | | | In a world where customers regard flawless products as a given, service is the key differentiator between competitors in any field. This wise and inspiring book by Leonard Berry, our leading service expert, moves far beyond his pioneering work in services marketing and service quality to explain how great service companies meet their toughest challenge: sustaining long-term success.
From Berry's exacting study of fourteen mature, highly successful, labor-intensive companies comes an astonishing revelation: the single most important factor in building a lasting service business is not a matter of savvy business practice, but of humane values. In all fourteen award-winning companies -- Bergstrom Hotels, The Charles Schwab Corporation, Chick-fil-A, The Container Store, Custom Research Inc., Dana Commercial Credit, Dial-A-Mattress, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Midwest Express Airlines, Miller SQA, Special Expeditions, St. Paul Saints, USAA, and Ukrop's Super Markets -- values-driven leadership connects with strategic focus, executional excellence, control of destiny, trust-based relationships, generosity, investment in employee success, acting small, and brand cultivation to drive customer satisfaction, innovation, and growth. Dedicating a chapter to each of these nine drivers, this book is the most far-reaching and insightful vision ever presented of the principles and step-by-step actions that continuously bring success to life in a company.
Berry's comprehensive model reveals the soul that underlies the strategies and day-to-day operations of great service companies, guiding the thousands of daily decisions of individual employees. Clear, compelling, pathbreaking, Discovering the Soul of Service is essential reading for managers everywhere.
